Grace and Peace
In Texas it doesn’t snow very often, so when it does it leaves a lasting impression. Several years ago, it snowed continually for days. As I sat entranced by the window and watched it fall, I was mystified by the way snow transforms and beautifies everything it touches. The brown grass had become a soft white blanket. Our old, worn wooden fence and bare, lifeless pecan tree took on the sudden appearance of majesty, peace and grace. And that is exactly what I think of when I see snow – God’s grace; so clean and pure. During those magical days of unending snowfall, I had an unforgettable realization. Just like the snow, God’s grace is always falling. It never stops. It is available to us most powerfully through the sacraments, but God showers it upon us in every moment of every day. But what struck me as I gazed outside is the reality that the only parts of the earth that are able to collect the snow are those that are facing upward; toward the heavens. In the same way, the only way we can receive the unceasing grace God has for us is if we turn our gaze to heaven and open ourselves up to Him. In our weakness and sin, we so desperately need God’s grace to become who He has called us to be – “transformed into His likeness…” (1 Cor. 3:18) I have had countless opportunities to receive that grace. Some I have embraced; many I have missed. This CD is a collection of songs I’ve written in my struggle and striving to reach out - and receive the grace of God. God’s grace is falling – it never stops – it is there for us in every situation and every circumstance. My prayer for you as you listen to these songs is that you may be reminded of that ever-present grace. May it strengthen you, transform you and bring you great peace.
